Sow Right Seeds - Lavender Seeds for Planting

DIY Palette Raised Garden

I hope you get a chance to do this type of garden, it’s the easiest type of garden I’ve ever done. The hardest part was digging up the soil by hand. Note to self, rent a tiller.  But hey,  double up on the weed barrier material and mulch, and all should be fine. Here is our DIY palette raised garden tutorial.

Why work harder?  Just let the proper supplies work for you.

Step by Step

Step 1

Choose your garden spot that will have sun.  6-8 hours of sun per day. My original garden spot had way too much shade.

Step 2

Choose a Heat Treated Palette

Step 3

Lay your palettes on the ground and measure out where your palettes will fit in your garden.

Step 4

Prepare the ground where your garden is going to be.  It’s best to have no grass and no weeds in this area.

Step 5

Lay down the weed barrier material, Dewitt 3-Foot by 100-Foot Non Woven 12-Year Landscape Fabric 12YR3100

Step 6

Dig a little space around the garden enough for your border to fit and place your boarder.  You may need border steaks or just dirt.

Step 7

Make sure the weed barrier material is tucked under the border so that it is secure.

Step 8

Turn your palettes over and staple the weed barrier material to fit the bottom of the palette(s) along with a couple of extra inches up around the sides from the bottom. Arrow Fastener T50 Heavy Duty Staple Gun

Stapel on the weed barrier material all the way across.

Step 9

Lay Mulch down across the entire garden area.Pine Bark Mulch, 100% Natural Pine Bark Mulch, House Plant Cover Mulch, Potting Media, and More (4qt)

Step 10

Lay the palette(s) on the ground where you want them to be, weed barrier material side down.  Fill the palette(s)  with good soil for a raised garden bed.  Here’s a soil suggestion.

Miracle-Gro Raised Bed Soil, 1.5 cu. ft.

Step 11

While the plants are still in their container, layout the plants where you want them to go.  Step back, and take a look, to help you decide if you like the layout.

Step 12

Dig a hole where you want your plants to go and submerge the plants in dirt inside the palette(s) Make sure to read your plants tags to ensure proper spacing.

Step 13

Label the plants. I chose to DIY my labels to resemble oars and focused this side of my garden to plants for making salsa, so I also made a sailboat to label that this is a “Salsa Garden”.  When my garden is finished I will  have a Nautical theme (Be sure to see our follow up DIY Posts, coming soon, Theme Gardens, Tiered Palette Planters, Chicken wire fence and Nautical Plant Labels & Decor )

Step 14

Water the plants. Here’s a Nozzle s suggestion, with lots of options.
