But buying Barbies and Barbie accessories all the time can add up. One thing you can do to save money is to make Barbie furniture out of household items.
We’re going to share with you our ideas on creating furniture out of items you already own. We’ll also go through how to make each one. We’ll also go through how to DIY so that you can contribute to the Barbie doll collection.
Barbie’s Round Kitchen Table
You’ll Need:
- Popsicle sticks
- A mason jar lid
- Your choice of paint
- Small paint brush
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
1. Paint the top of the mason jar lid. You can paint the bottom too if you want. Instead of painting it, you can also use fabric to cover the top of the lid. You can use the hot glue gun to hold the fabric in place.
2. Let the paint dry completely.
3. Cut about 1/4 of the popsicle stick. This is so the legs aren’t too long.
4. Flip the mason jar lid over. Use the hot glue gun to glue the popsicle sticks around the edges of the lid. The cut end should be under the table while the uncut end should be the bottom of the legs. Place the popsicle sticks evenly apart. Wait for the glue to dry before you use your new table.
Barbie’s Living Room Chairs
You’ll Need:
- Paper clips
- Sponge
- Piece of cardboard
- Your choice of fabric
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
1. Cut out a piece of cardboard in a rectangle shape. This will turn into the seat of your chair.
2. Fold the piece of cardboard in half. If you cut out a decent size, it should be big enough to be a Barbie chair.
3. You might need more paper clips for this step if your chair is larger. And you might need less paperclips if the chair is smaller. But for the average-sized chair, you need to hot glue a paper clip under the cardboard. There should be a paperclip on each side, like chair legs.
4. Let the two paperclips dry completely.
5. You’re going to do the same thing with the back of the chair. You’ll hot glue a paperclip on each side.
6. Let these paperclips dry as well.
7. Now you’re going to wrap the fabric around the chair. Tuck in the fabric where there would be natural creases. Take the hot glue gun and glue the fabric onto the rest of the chair. Let the glue dry and before you know it, your Barbie will be relaxing in her new comfy chair.
Barbie’s Couch
You’ll Need:
- 8 sponges
- Your choice of fabric
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
1. First, you’re going to make the base of the couch. You want to plan it out before you glue everything together. Take the sponges and shape them into the couch shape you want. You’ll have to cut a few of the sponges to create the back of the couch and the arms. Once you know how it’s going to go, take the hot glue gun and glue the pieces together.
2. Let the sponges dry completely before you head to the next step.
3. You’re going to make the seat cushions now. Cut a sponge up to fit where seat cushions would go. Use the hot glue gun to glue them to the rest of the couch.
4. Let the glued seat cushions dry.
5. Once the couch is all the way dry, wrap it in fabric. You’re going to glue the fabric onto the couch. Make sure to tuck the fabric in where natural creases would be. Let your new couch dry before you do use it.
Barbie’s Bed
You’ll Need:
- Top and bottom of a Velveeta cheese box
- Sponge
- Your choice of fabric
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
1. Take the hot glue gun and glue the two Velveeta boxes together. You’re going to set them off to the side so the glue can dry.
2. While the boxes are drying together, you’re going to work on your pillows. Cut two small Barbie pillow-sized rectangles out of the sponge.
3. From the fabric, cut out enough fabric to wrap around the pieces of sponge. You want the fabric to be a little bit bigger than the sponges so you can wrap them up on the back. Then you can use the hot glue gun and glue them together. You can put the pillows off to the side to dry.
4. By now the cheese boxes should be dry. Take the fabric and cover the top and sides with fabric. Use the hot glue gun to glue this fabric to the boxes. This is your sheets. Let the bed dry.
5. You can fold the extra fabric up into a blanket. When the bed is dry, hang it over the bed like you would a blanket.
6. For bonus points, use popsicle sticks to make a headboard.
Barbie’s Big Bathtub
You’ll Need:
- A plastic container that’s big enough for Barbie to sit in
- Your choice of paint
- Small paintbrush
1. First, paint the outside of the plastic container with a color you’d like but most bathtubs are an off-white.
2. Let the paint dry completely.
3. When the outside of the container is finished drying, paint the inside of the container as if it were a bathtub.
4. Allow the container to dry before you use the new bathtub.
