A red velvet cake and a red velvet cupcake are perfect gifts for your loved ones, either on valentine’s day, mother’s day, or any other special day.
However, you can add a twist to the red velvet products, and instead of the cupcakes or cakes, you can make red velvet crinkle. Make the best red velvet crinkles using an oven toaster.
They are just as sweet as the other red velvet products. However, you may want to give your loved ones a present you made yourself, or maybe you do not have the money to buy store-made ones.
You may also not have a regular oven, but that should not stop you from making your crinkles.
This recipe shows you how you can make your perfect red velvet crinkle using your oven toaster. I used it, and my crinkles turned out great.
- Two cups of all purpose flour
- Two teaspoon n of baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon of baking soda
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 1/3 cup of cocoa powder
- ½ cup of vegetable oil
- 1 ½ cup of granulated sugar
- Powdered sugar
- Three eggs
- ½ block of block cream cheese
- One teaspoon of vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon of red food coloring if you are using gel food coloring, or ½ teaspoon if you are using liquid food coloring
Before starting the baking process, you have to gather all your ingredients and a few bowls and have them all on your cooking table. That makes the process easier, faster, and more organized.
Step one: Mix ingredients
In one bowl, add your flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. To give a smooth finish, you can sift the flour to eliminate any lumps and particles. One of the main things you want to achieve in your crinkles is the cracks.
To achieve those, your baking powder baking soda has to be as fresh as possible.
To ensure the baking powder is still fresh, sprinkle some of it into hot water, and if it sizzles, it is good to go. Whisk the drying ingredient thoroughly until they are well mixed and set them aside.
In another bowl, add granulated sugar and baking cocoa powder. If your cocoa powder has some lumps, first press it and ensure most of the lumps are gone.
Alternatively, you can sift it before you add it to the sugar.
After that, whisk the sugar and the cocoa powder until they are uniformly mixed. Follow that by adding the vegetable oil into that mixture.
The vegetable oil will help eliminate all the cocoa powder you did not manage to crush.
Mix the mixture until the vegetable oil evenly spreads through the mixture.
You should have a moist mixture that easily forms balls at the end of mixing when you whisk it around.
After you attain that consistency, add your eggs. Do not add all the eggs at once.
Instead, add one, mix it well, and then add the other until you have all eggs in the mixture.
That not only makes it easy for you to mix the eggs into the sugar and cocoa mixture, but it also helps you attain a more uniform texture and ensures that you beat all the eggs well.
Unlike when baking normal cakes, do not feel the need to mix the eggs until they start foaming. After adding all the eggs, add your vanilla extract.
It not only helps with the taste but also helps eliminate the “eggy” smell from your crinkles.
To add the red color to your crinkles, add the red food coloring at the same time with the vanilla extract and mix them properly into the mixture.
To complete the mixing process, it’s time to add the drying ingredients you set aside. To ensure that you mix them well, work in portions as you did with the eggs.
Add half of the ingredients first, then mix them until you cannot see any floor in the mixture.
Finally, add the other half of the ingredients, and mix until all the flour disappears.
Adding the ingredients in parts is the most effective way to achieve a perfect mix, and it also eliminates the chances of you spilling any ingredients on your workstation.
After you properly mix all the ingredients and achieve a uniform consistency, cover the mixture with cling paper and let your mixture sit for an hour.
That lets the dough cool, making it easier for you to roll into balls and gives you thicker crinkles.
Step two: Make the cream cheese filling
While you don’t need to make the cream cheese filling, it helps add flavor when you serve the crinkles.
While you wait for your ingredients to settle, add cream cheese into a separate bowl and whisk it until it becomes creamy.
You can either use a whisk or a hand-held mixer. Add five tablespoons of confectioners sugar and a tablespoon of vanilla extract to add flavor to your cream cheese filling.
Whisk the mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy, and set it aside.
Step three: Make dough balls
Making a dough ball is probably the most interesting but also a time-consuming step of the whole process. To get the perfect-sized crinkles, use a teaspoon and scoop your crinkle mixture.
Have powdered sugar in a separate bowl, and after making the balls, roll them in the sugar for the coating and added flavor.
To get the perfect coating on your crinkles, roll the balls in the sugar twice.
That gives a thick sugar coating that will not dissolve into the dough when it’s baking. Use your hands to shape the balls into the perfect circles.
Step four: Baking
The first thing you should do to start baking is spread parchment paper on a baking tray, then spray it with some oil.
The oil makes it impossible for your crinkles to get stuck on the paper as they cook, which not only makes it difficult to remove them but also untidy.
As you make the dough balls, arrange them neatly on the parchment paper, leaving enough space between them for expansion.
As you do this, you need to preheat the oven. Preheating your oven toaster gives it time to attain the correct temperature you need for the best crinkles.
If you don’t preheat it, you will end up getting heavy and uncooked crinkles.
Finally, the time you have been waiting for! Once you have all your dough rolled up and on the baking tray, put it into the preheated oven toaster and bake for five minutes.
Depending on the texture you want your crinkles to have, the baking time could vary. You can have either crumbly or chewy. For crumbly crinkles, you need more time than chewy ones.
Baking them for longer also gives you bigger crinkles.
Also, it takes less time in the oven toaster than when using a regular toaster because the oven toaster has high and uncontrolled temperatures.
After your crinkles are fully cooked, set them on a wire rack until they are fully cool.
Step five: Serving
You can have your crinkles as single cringles, or you can use the cream cheese filling to take the flavor a notch higher.
All you need to do is spread the cream cheese filling on one crinkle and layer another one on top.
You can also have them alone as a snack or take them with any drink of your choice. If you want to store the crinkles, put them in an airtight container and store them at room temperature.
They will remain fresh for about three days.
If you want to make more cookies, all you have to do is double the recipe by increasing the ingredients with the right ratio.
If you are a person who prefers chocolate to red velvet flavor, you can still make your chocolate crinkles.
The good thing is that you can make both dark and white chocolate ones.
If you are making dark chocolate crinkles, the process is almost the same as that of the red velvet ones, only that you do not add the red food color. Also, it helps to add unsweetened cocoa powder.
While making the white chocolate ones, you do not need to add cocoa powder and red food color to your recipe.
However, you need all the other ingredients and high-quality, melted chocolate.
While mixing your wet ingredients, add your chocolate slowly, while whisking, until you get a thoroughly mixed mixture with the right consistency.
After making the crinkles, the rest of the process is the same as the red velvet cookies. You need to roll them in the confectioner’s sugar after you finish making the mixture.
You can also add chocolate chips to all of your crinkles, the same way you would when baking cookies. If you want to feel the chocolate chips in every bite of the crinkles, it is best to add the mini size.
